Converge – Last Light

I know converge is like the hardcore kids staple diet but if I listen to the album “You Fail Me” by Converge before a set it does inhuman things to my adrenaline, so it has become my closest thing to a warmup.

Dillinger Escape Plan  - 43% Burnt

I was 14 and Dillinger were my first exposure to heavy music, this was the first song I ever heard by Dillinger. This was the first track I ever saw performed by Dillinger and this has remained my favourite song since.

Khuda  - Iecava

This band are my down tempo, need to fall asleep band. Our van has no windows in the back, and it’s freezing cold so I listen to this EP when I want to really exaggerate to myself the bleakness of the back of that van haha I also have spent a lot of time writing lyrics to this record.

With this playlist I have tried to incorporate most of my influences. I can rarely sit down at home and enjoy listening to lengthy episodes of hardcore. More modern alt-country and folk artists play a big part in defining my taste and I like to think that these are subconsciously influential in Veils’ song-writing.

As long as the music has passion and emotional connection I’ll take it, and these 11 songs represent some very prime examples of that.

Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) - Posion Oak 

Call me adolescent but I still believe Conor Oberst to be one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. From emo posterchild to political thirtysomething, the vast range of emotions and topics covered by his tragic and hopeful poetical warblings are just simply in a different realm to anyone who tried to come close in the past 15 or so years. Oberst has provided our narcissistic and nihilistic generation with a perfect commentary for our soul-searching and our heartache.

Pg99 - We Left As Skeletons 

“You are every ounce of horror, every reminding second of a completely terrible life. You’re the single most constant mistake of why most my body aches, and from the cold, iron shackles you locked around my heart to the chunks of my life you picked out from your teeth. I remember for a moment about the person I used to be. “

Alexisonfire - Little Girls Pointing And Laughing

One of the first ‘alternative’ songs I ever heard and thus changing my life forever. Without Alexisonfire, this album, perhaps this song I would never have gone down the path I have today, met the people that have influenced and shaped my life so much and had the best time along the way. Those intro chords, the screams, it was all so spine-chilling. It’s crazy when you think how different your life would be if one little thing was missed out, or you didn’t do one small event. Well this song is that event and this band are my favourite band (RIP).

When I was making this playlist I filled it with bands like Kerouac, Goodtime Boys, The Long Haul etc. But if you like us enough to care what we listen to you will no doubt already know those bands. If you don’t, then go listen to them now. I tried to steer clear of hardcore in general, most of the hardcore bands I like are either big enough that everyone knows them or too small to be on Spotify.

Propagandhi – Without Love

This is just a really poignant song. Something Propagandhi are very good at. It reminds you to cherish life because it’s fragile, and can be taken away far too easily. Don’t waste it. 

Polar bear Club – Most Miserable Life

Polar Bear Club are a band that make me think of friends. And this song is a perfect example. It’s a song I listen to when I miss being on tour, or going to shows. It reminds me of shouting lyrics at the top of my lungs with my best friends.

Against Me! – Pints of Guinness Make You Strong

I’m a sucker for a sad song. Especially one that isn’t about some girl that broke some guy’s heart. Against Me! were probably the first punk band I listened to so I guess they’re mostly responsible for my taste in music now. Clichéd as it sounds, their newer releases are pretty weak. But their older albums will always hold up.

I’m pleased to announce the release of Let’s Talk Daggers third EP, Winter. One of the most underrated band’s in the UK, Let’s Talk Daggers have always been impossible to pigeon-hole. Winter is no different, but amongst a schizophrenic blend of genres is some of the band’s most accessible and catchy (if you can call it that) material to date. By far the best thing they’ve done. Check out the video for the first song, Bear of Bad News below:

Goodtime Boys have announced a UK weekender. These shows, in Cardiff, London and Bristol, will serve as a warm-up to their European tour with Pianos Become The Teeth in March.

The Long Haul’s debut solo release, Debtors is now available to pre-order. Since their split EP with Kerouac in 2011, The Long Haul have evolved their brand of passionate, bluegrass-tinged hardcore into something stronger and more significant. Debtors is a dynamic and fervent record that spits and screams when it needs to but can also sit back effortlessly. This is thought-out and intelligent music, and the introduction of new vocalist Harry Fanshawe brings fresh ideas and lyrical creativity that perfectly complements the band’s already established technical hardcore style.

Debtors was recorded by guitarist Lewis Johns at The Ranch Production House and since it was previously made available to stream, has been re-mastered by Alan Douches (Converge, Brand New, Dillinger Escape Plan), perfectly capturing the band’s raw and energetic sound. The five tracks are available on a single sided 12″ on translucent green or black vinyl with printed inners/lyrics and some incredible artwork from Jamie McDonald. In addition to an instant download of the full EP, all pre-orders come with an exclusive, digital-only bonus track, featuring guest vocals from Alex Pennie (Goodtime Boys).

Debtors is released February 6th.

Veils’ new EP Clarity is now available to pre-order from the online store! This is the bands debut EP proper, following an incredibly well received demo earlier this year. Anyone who’s heard it or seen these guys live will agree that Veils are one of the most exciting bands to have emerged this year in the UK scene.
